Big Value Depot – Past, Present and Future — 74 Comments

  1. They are right the best advertising you can do is the one that leaves you open and available to do the work that needs done in a start up business. If you are the business owner of a small business and don’t have time to do the work required to get it off the ground then you can’t afford to lose a lot of time advertising. Great article keep up the good work.

  2. I think the more advertising you can get the better off you will be in the long run but the point about having it on the internet is more important because people use the internet a lot more than they watch TV. It also depends on what you are advertising if it is for the younger crowd then yes you want to advertise on internet.

  3. I have found that advertising is a fine art if you do it correctly and in enough places your business is going to sky rocket but if it is not done correctly then you can lose customers because of the lack of advertising and lack of information available to the customer. Thank you for this article it is full of great information.

  4. I think this is great news and I will be watching for the TV ads because I am hoping to spot a little more information on cost and things through that. Your article was great and I hope that you will keep us updated on anything new that comes out in the future. You did a great job in how you presented this info and I thank you.

  5. Robert I was reading your comment and could you please tell us why running a web site with an e-commerce plugin better than the TV advertising that they are talking about here? I am rather old fashioned when it comes to this kind of stuff so any help I can get understanding this stuff would be much appreciated.

  6. This is great and I can’t wait to get it on my phone, the things we will be able to do with this will be great and it will make things a lot more easy when you are trying to post something for sale. Thank you, I haven’t seen anything else on it, I know they are supposed to be advertising on TV but I haven’t seen anything yet.

  7. You just have to pick the type of advertising that is easiest for you and will leave you the time you need to do the actual work that needs done by your company. As a business owner you can’t just stop production in order to concentrate all your efforts on marketing alone you won’t make any money and you won’t be in business very long.

    • Hi George,

I pretty much agree. That’s why Big Value Depot have made listing quick and have done some TV advertising

  8. I think there is good and bad to both TV ads and website ads. You just have to pick the one that is easiest for you and will leave you the time you need to do the actual work that needs done by your company. If you are spending all of your time trying to do the advertising and can’t get any work done what is the point of being in business, go into advertising.

  9. I wonder if this i-phone application is at all compatible with that new credit card swiping machine that attaches to ipads and other mobile devices. I am referring to the “Square which I think is made by Google – though I really am not sure. I has a white small box that attaches to a USB 2.0 port and which enables you to swipe a credit card. I imagine you need a card reader for any processing system, right?

  10. Do you ever think they will make this so you can use the app or your phone in order to purchase something or will it forever remain the only thing you can do with it is post items and look at them? I don’t see why you could post something with your phone but not purchase something, does it make sense to you? Even still I am looking forward to it.

    • Hi Sammy, The app is only for listing. Purchasing is available online which is possible on a smartphone with internet capabilities.

  11. You mentioned the TV ads would start running in the first two weeks of June right, or was it July? Either way if it was June I haven’t seen anything yet but if it was July I haven’t missed anything yet. I think having this advertised on the internet would be a good idea as well. I think just as many if not more people watch the internet more than TV.

  12. If you had one of those card readers that hooks to your phone would you be able to use this app. to purchase things from the auction or is it still post and view only? I don’t see why you could post something with your phone but not purchase something, does it make sense to you? Even still I am looking forward to it, when is it available?

    • Hi Ernest,

You don’t need the app to purchase. You can do that online which is accessible through a computer or a smartphone with internet capabilities.

  13. I think not only should there be TV advertisements but I think having this advertised on the internet would be a good idea as well. I think just as many if not more people watch the internet more than TV. I know with Facebook and things like that my husband spends more time on the internet then he does the TV and so does my daughter. Can you advertise on Facebook?

    • Hi Emmett,

They’re in agreement with you! They already have promotions on Facebook and YouTube.

  14. The 5 free listings and only $14.95 for 100 listings is a good deal but the Platinum version that is unlimited for $99 is the best deal yet. I haven’t read much on the Pro version (what is different) but for a $1 trial it might be worth looking into. The stuff you posted here is great and I look forward to trying this as soon as possible. I’ll look for the ad on Facebook.

  15. I love the fact that a ten year old can successfully list something on here. That means a lot to me because the easier it is the more stuff people will put on there. Ebay wasn’t so user friendly and you couldn’t find an easy way to list things. I am looking forward to this I can’t wait, and you only need a smart phone if you want to post something on there?

    • Hi Win,

Glad you like the simplicity. A smartphone makes it really easy to list items, but you can still do the same thing on the internet. You don’t have to have a smartphone.

  16. I live in the southeast and I haven’t seen any ads yet on TV but it is only the first week of June and it isn’t like I am in front of the TV 24/7. I look forward to getting more information on this and I hope that you will continue to post anything new that you get as well. This is an exciting move forward into the next generation.

  17. I use Ebay all the time but they are not the most user friendly so I would be very grateful to have another fall back that I could use in case Ebay just won’t work. This sounds like that fall back. Is there a limit to how much you can put on there to be auctioned off? I am going to look into this more so that I can get up to speed.

    • Hi Janice,

Great. You’ll love it. They have just 3 price points giving you 5 listings for free, 100 for $14.95 or unlimited for $99.

  18. Do you think this will put things like Ebay out of business? This is a great article and the last thing I think we need is more auction sites. But this one actually sounds really promising. Thank you so much for the information I will look further into it and see just how it compares to the Ebay before I make any rash decisions though.

    • I don’t think they’ll ever put ebay out of business and I don’t think they want to because competition is good.

  19. I can’t wait to get this app on my phone. I use Ebay all the time but they are not the most user friendly so I would be very grateful to have another fall back that I could use in case Ebay just won’t work. This sounds like that fall back. Is there a limit to how much you can put on there to be auctioned off? This is great, thanks for the post.

  20. How many apps. Do they have for the Iphone now? I have been trying to get as many usable ones as I can and this is going to be one of those. An auction app. so that you can sell stuff like ebay is a great idea and I can’t wait to use it the first time. Thank you for coming up with the idea I hope that you come out with more soon.

  21. I have used ebay for quite some time now and I really like it but this sounds like it might even be better. And the fact that you can get it on your phone is great. There is so much going through your phone now days but to get on ebay you have to gt on the internet and things like that but this one is an app. all it’s own right?

  22. Thank you Big Value Depot for bringing the webstore option to us and the fact that it is on the Iphone is awesome. I got my phone last year and every time I turn around they are coming up with something for it, and app. or something that I am having to learn how to use. Thank you for posting this because I use Ebay all the time and this actually sounds better.

  23. It sounds like this team of Eglin marketing gurus really know how to brand a product. It would seem that at some point, they decided to shift their focus from high-end clientele, to being an e-commerce platform service provider for the masses. I would say that is a shrewd move considering that most established e-commerce platforms cater to the small startup business. Some platforms are free to use and only charge when you utilize premium features.

  24. This is really kind of cool I am one of those people that have to have the newest best electronics on the market and as soon as something better comes out I get it and trade in my old stuff or give it away. The Iphone isn’t new anymore but this app is and I can’t wait to get it and try it out. Can you put just about anything on there to be auctioned?

    • Hi Sarah,

Yes, anything that’s family friendly or business related. Of course they don’t allow any of those things that would trip a spam filter! Worth having a browse at their catagories first to get an idea of what’s allowed and for ideas on what you can list.

  25. Is it likely that eventually everyone will have to have a smart phone? Are companies getting ready to pull the plug on regular phones like I have that is just basic with text capabilities and force everyone to go to smart phones? Is it true that all smart phones require the internet to function properly and that is an additional charge every month?

    • Hey Ryan,

I reckon smartphones are the way of the future. It’s worth checking out what’s available and the options and features. You don’t need a smartphone to use BVD just internet access but the smartphone app is great for listing items to sell.

  26. I am really getting fed up with all the phones and apps. Etc. you can get on your computer and get apps and you can get on your computer to talk to each other and do anything that the phone will do. People rely to much on their phones for everything and they can’t function with out it. I wish I didn’t have one because I don’t want to be so accessable.

    • Hey Matthew,

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I’d encourage you to embrace change. It’s life in 2012!

  27. My son wants one of these phones, everything with him is about “I something. He had an Ipod that he ruined because he tried to fix something that wasn’t really broken. He wants an Ipad instead of a lap top and now he wants the Iphone so he can have all the apps and things that are free. I hope this craze slows down soon.

  28. You can’t compete with the big boys if you don’t have the budget as a small company. But hoe do you go about finding out if a company has a budget and if you think it is going to be good enough. You have a very interesting outlook on this and I would really appreciate it if you could explain how you tell. You have done a great job on this article.

    • Hi Freda,

This is a complex question with no easy answer. I prefer to try and find out if they have a track record that gives them credibility. If they do then you can move forwards with more confidence and less fear.

BVD have proven themselves to be trust worthy because they have come through with their goals and promises. I acknowlege they were at times a little late, but I believe that was because they wanted to be sure of the reliability of their system. The main thing is that it’s now all up and running and works really well.

It’s virtually impossible to really know what their exact financial position is, but we do know that the 5 free listings is a no-brainer.

  29. Can you auction off anything you want to on this app? There are something they won’t allow you to put on there when it is Ebay I think and most of that stuff has a cool story behind. I am glad however that someone is finally going to give Ebay a run for their money. Great job keep it up.

    • You can auction most things that are legal and wouldn’t trip a spam filter. Your best option is to check their categories list – you’ll find most things have a home. It’s a great ebay alternative and they will be given a run for their money as time goes on.

  30. I hope this catches on quickly for them because I look forward to using it myself, I just want to wait a little bit until they are more firmly established so I know that they aren’t going to be gone before I can auction off my stuff. The hardest thing I’m having to do is decide how long of a waiting period I need to give before I get started.

  31. I think this is great and I wish them well with it. If the marketing they do is strong enough this will take off like a wild fire. You have done a great job getting on here and telling us as much as you could about it, now lets see what happens. Thank you for taking the time to put this post together.

    • Hey Silvia,

My understanding is that they will roll out some TV ads in the Southwest area of the US the first 2 weeks of June. I think success will come if they focus on viral marketing strategies and don’t break the bank by trying to do too much to soon.

  32. I am not sure how this is going to pan out for this application but I am going to take a wait and see attitude because I think if they made it more user friendly then ebay is they should be able to hold their own in the market. I wish them well and I will keep tabs on how they are doing.

    • It is a lot easier and user friendly than eBay. The CEO tested it out on a 10year old who successfully listed a product!

  33. Robert I have to agree with them on this one I would much rather have the leverage of the TV advertising then the ecommerce plug-in that you were mentioning. Let someone else do the dirty work for you for awhile and see how it is going to go before you invest more time into it yourself.

  34. If Big value Depot is an auction site for individuals and businesses isn’t it competing with Ebay, which has been around now for years and they even have stores that you can take your stuff to and get it listed? I think if that’s the case that it’s going to be very hard to compete with them and it is going to take a lot of capital to keep things going until you get there.

    • I agree it will be hard to compete with eBay but I don’t think that’s their focus. At the end of the day they want to take a quality product to the market place and let the people determine its success or failure. If it proves to be as popular as I think it will then the viral aspect will take over success will follow. I’m not certain but didn’t MySpace come out before Facebook?

  35. Carmen you are absolutely right and you have pointed out some really good points on what to look for when it comes to marketing capabilities and things of that nature. You can’t compete with the big boys if you don’t have the budget as a small company. You have a very interesting outlook on things and I am glad that I read this before I jumped in over my head.

    • Hey Charles,

I respect your opinion but I believe testing the water with their 5 free listings is the way forward. Not much risk involved there.

  36. Does this BVD i-phone app enable merchants to let their clients use their smart phones to charge their credit cards or PayPal accounts? I saw a news report recently which talked about how smart phone apps are emerging in the e-commerce sector which lets store fronts accept credit cards without the need to pay for bank issued merchant services. I think this is a great development because I hate to pay inflated charges to merchant resellers.

    • Hi George,

The app itself is only for registering your account and then listing items on BVD through it. You cannot use it to actually process a payment if someone wishes to purchase an item you have listed.

      Hope that clarifies things

  37. What a clever way to produce an inexpensive yet catchy video presentation. This Big Ticket Depot sounds like a bold movement. I say bold because the persons daring enough to put big money behind an aggressive marketing campaign in a highly competitive industry where there are only very few companies that own the market shares. I think it’s a tough business, but if it is well funded, then anything is possible for this upstart brand.

  38. I understand what you are saying about needing time to really test it but a limited time offer should be time enough right? I’m thinking the marketing they are doing will be aggressive enough to get the clients they really want and not the ones that aren’t serious. You have posted a great article and you have a lot of information.

  39. If seems as if this is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a program that is budding and about to explode world wide. It is so difficult to compete against the giant resellers and retail chains. So anytime I come across a program like this, the first thing I look for is whether the program has a large enough budget for marketing. Only then can it hope to compete well.

    • Hey Carmen,

It’s always difficult to know in advance whether what a company is saying is true or just hype, but they have come through on all their promises so far, as far as I can tell. Only time will tell if their budget is big enough to compete, but going by the integrity they’ve shown so far I think they have and will get the results they are aiming for.

  40. Marcos I am not positive but it sounds as though you want this for free. I understand what you are saying about needing time to really test it but a limited time offer should be sufficient enough. I thinking the marketing they are doing will be aggressive enough to get the clients they really want and not the ones that aren’t serious.

    • i think they will get sufficient clients to compete with eBay. By using TV as an advertising medium they will get immediate results fast and create a viral effect.

  41. According to what the admin wrote about with the various offers and features of this e-commerce system, I would say that it’s free trial versions are about identical to that of another e-commerce system, ECWID, which also offers a free version for under 100 cart item listings and a paid version for over 100 and which includes certain other shopping cart features in the paid package. This system seems like it is worth trying out.

    • Hey Don thanks for taking the time to comment. ECWID is a shopping cart software application for businesses to sell products online, whereas Big Value Depot is an auction site for both individuals and businesses. 2 different things altogether. Hope this clarifies things for you.

  42. Is this really so? That this system is backed by an aggressive marketing strategy? It sounds as if the marketing phase is coming in the near future. The most important question for me is whether this e-commerce solution offers a free trial version. I certainly hope they have the vision to offer a free trial, and not some limited time offer. Any webmaster needs as much time as necessary to fully test a system before buying in.

    • Hi Marcos,

The marketing phase is happening right now. They are currently running TV Ads as well as the usual Facebook and YouTube promotions. I think that’s pretty aggressive. They have followed through on their promises with a great deal more in the pipeline

They have options for 5 free listings, a $1 trial of the Pro version (100 listings plus additional features for $14.95) and the Platinum version which gives unlimited listings and enhanced features.

  43. A sign of the times. Early in the twentieth century, it was that now famous column writer who first published the night before Christmas poem and now that we are in the information age, the chatter has moved from good old fashion family values to technology and the internet. I’m quite sure this system is very simple to setup your own web store, but for me personally, I’d rather run my own website with an e-commerce plugin.

    • Hey Robert, Appreciate your honesty. For me, Id rather have the leverage of all the TV advertising they’re planning to do this year and in the future.
